Green Truro Conference 2021 – Healthy Soils; Healthy City

Friday, 2nd July 2021 - 10am – 3:30pm

Following last year's popular conference on Wilding, this year the theme is Soil : 'Healthy Soils: Healthy City' which looks at the structure and content of this amazing substance and how it can be restored after years of neglect.  We also look at the benefits of good soil and healthy vegetation for mental and physical health and well-being, and at what we are doing in Truro to protect this ecosystem for wildlife and people.

Speakers include;

  • Dr Nina Lindstrom Friggens, Research Fellow and plant-soil ecologist at the University of Exeter, to take us into the science of soil and how it is formed. (Key speaker)
  • Nigel Unwin, public health physician and epidemiologist working for University of Exeter at Treliske will be demonstrating the academic research around this topic.
  • Conor Kendrew, STEM co-ordinator for Cornwall Colleges, will address regenerating soil and Truro City Council’s Liam Shoesmith on how to make the best of soil as a growing medium.
  • Paul Simmons will outline his work as a Forest Bathing instructor and the mental and physical benefits of time in nature, and this will be followed up with news of local schemes run by Chris Waddle and others at Truro City Council.
  • Merlin Hanbury Tennison is speaking on his experience of running a living laboratory that researches the restorative power of nature.
